Imago Dei
Don’t worry- I didn’t know what this meant at first either But now that I do, it’s a staple in the way I view myself, my family, and others.
Imago Dei is latin and means made in the image of God. It comes from the very beginning of the Bible when God is creating the humans in Genesis 1:27. The passage says, “God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.” This goes for everyone reading or not reading this. You were created in the image of God, He put His own personal touch on you!
This isn’t talking about our looks or bodies, it talking about our spirits. We obviously verrrry different from every other creature on earth, we have intellect, freedom, rationality, and so much more that sets us apart from other creatures and makes us image bearers of God.
Anytime someone invents a machine, writes a book, paints a landscape, enjoys a symphony, calculates a sum, or names a pet, she is proclaiming the fact that we are made in God’s image. You reflect and have the traits of God whether you want to or not (how amazing is that?!).
Let’s start treating others on this truth… That they are made in the image of God, even if they don’t act like it… HA! We also have to start seeing this in ourselves, letting this phrase be the things that gives us confidence- not our outward appearance.
